Today marks the 50th birthday of former Cincinnati Reds third baseman Chris Sabo. In 1988, the former hockey player batted .271, stole 46 bases, and won the National League Rookie of the Year award. Then-manager Pete Rose bestowed the nickname “Spuds” upon Sabo during his rookie season due to his resemblance to Spuds MacKenzie, a bull terrier who appeared in Bud Light advertisements.
